Lots of creativity on display at our June meeting!
Jan’s two quilts made from precuts. The middle image shows the back of the quilt on the right. She will be adding a crocheted border in pink.
Renee’s first two blocks for the Winter Star quilt for her mother. Love these soothing colors!
Two bird blocks Linda is testing for a pattern maker on the left. The other is an exploration of various Dresden Plate blocks from a class she took. Check out the big stitch quilting on this one!
Next year’s QuiltCon will be held in Raleigh, just a few hours south of Fredericksburg, and we expect quite a few members to be there. For this upcoming show, the Guild would like to create and enter a Group/Bee quilt. The only requirement is that at least three people must work on it. Otherwise, it’s up to us – colors, size, techniques, whatever! Come to our meeting this Thursday and we can see who’s interested. Bee members can also attend the sew-in on June 24 to discuss possibilites.
Our regular meeting will be held on Thursday, June 8th. BUT we also have an in-person sew-in scheduled for Saturday, June 24th, from 10:00-5:00 at our regular location, the Salem Church Library. Drop in for an hour or two, or stay the whole day! Feel free to bring whatever you are working on. It’s a great way to get some sewing done while chatting with fellow guild members and sharing good ideas.
*If you’re bringing your machine, don’t forget an extension cord.
*Ditto for irons, plus an ironing board or other surface (wool pressing mat, etc.).
*Remember to bring your cutting mat, too, plus all the notions you can’t sew without: wonder clips, sewing machine needles, rotary cutter, scissors, thimbles, etc. etc. etc.
ALSO: we have traditionally included a technique or project to share or demonstrate. Previous projects include an origami bag, a soup bowl cozy, and how to make eight half-square triangles at a time. If you have a favorite technique to share, or a simple project that can be completed (or at least well started!) in a few hours, please let us know. Email fredericksburgmodernquiltguild@gmail.com or tell us about your idea at our upcoming meeting.
Lots of creativity on display last month! Don’t forget to bring your show and tells to our June meeting, Thursday, June 8th. We have the room from 5:00-8:00, and the business meeting starts at 6:00.
A quick reminder that we are meeting this evening, Thursday, May 11. The room will open at 5:00, and the business meeting starts at 6:00. Bring your challenges if you have them, and don’t forget your show and tells!
Note that we have two upcoming sew-in dates at the Salem Church Library: June 24 and September 23. Both days are Saturdays. You can bring anything you want to work on to our sew-ins, and we might have a new technique to share. Stay tuned!

This month’s meeting included a member’s very first quilt (yay!), a couple of entries in our found objects challenge, and more. Take a look!
Jan’s creative entry was made by bleaching and printing shells, as well as coffee-dying cheesecloth
Sharon was inspired by the recent balloon spying (or whatever it was!) to create her own balloons here. Ask her to tell you more about it!
The first quilt made by new quilter Renée. Well done!!
And her second qulit, also lovely! Both were quilted by our LQS, Straight Stitch Quilts.
Lori created these charming bird houses!
This is the latest creation by Linda, sparked by a class she’s been taking. Linda designed and paper pieced it, and the teacher will be including it in her new book!!
When your neighbors are having babies – two twins and a singleton, all boys – what else can you do but make a quilt? This is one of three that Linda has made this month for the new arrivals.
Reminder about our found objects challenge: Bring something to the meeting, whether it’s fabric or an object, that you will use in the challenge. It could be an old key, an interesting rock, a piece of twine, old earrings, or anything else that inspires you to create! Inspiration for this challenge comes from a book by Jane Davila. (The library owns her Art Quilt Workbook.) Check her out on Facebook at Jane Davila and on Instagram at @JaneDavila. Here’s an example of her work:
Mark your calendars for next month’s meeting, on April 13th. Bring your found objects wall quilts and anything else you’re working on!

Both Linda B and Jan F are active in Project Linus, so feel free to ask them if you have any questions about this worthy organization!
Of course, you can also work on your own projects if you want to.
Bring a lunch or pick up something at Pho Saigon, a Vietnamese place, or Tito & Teresa Restaurant, a Honduran place, just a few steps beyond the library parking lot.
